In the ancient world, merchants used scales to weigh goods for trade. A dishonest merchant might tilt the balance slightly to his favour, gaining profit at another’s expense. The proverb declares that such deceit is an abomination to the Lord, a term normally reserved for idolatry, because it violates the very character of God. When the marketplace becomes a site of exploitation, it ceases to reflect God’s justice and truth. But when we deal honestly, fulfil our commitments, and act with integrity even when no one is watching, we bring delight to God. Integrity, therefore, is not just good business practice; it is an act of worship.
Faith in the marketplace is tested not only in how hard we work but in how truthfully we work. Every invoice, every agreement, and every decision becomes an act that either reflects or distorts God’s image in us. The Christian worker is called to embody the character of the Creator. We are to act with fairness, transparency, and righteousness in all dealings. When integrity governs our work, we testify to a God whose ways are just and whose delight is found in those who walk uprightly.

Righteous God, make me a person of integrity in all my work. Keep me from deceit, compromise, and hidden wrongs. Let my honesty and fairness reflect Your character so that my dealings may bring delight to You and blessing to others. Amen.
