And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church…’

– Matthew 16:17-18a

Peter’s confession did not come from his own brilliance or insight. Jesus makes clear that it was revealed by the Father in heaven. The church rests not on human discovery but on divine revelation. And Jesus Himself declares: “I will build my church.” The outpost of the kingdom is not a human construction project, fragile and uncertain, but the work of Christ Himself. He lays the foundation, gathers His people, and establishes them firmly as His church.

This truth is deeply comforting. The strength of the church does not lie in our strategies, programs, or cleverness, but in Christ’s own promise to build. We may faithfully labour, but He is the builder. Our role is not to invent or sustain the church by our own ability, but to trust in His work and align ourselves with His purposes. This frees us from fear when the church seems weak, and fills us with confidence that He is always at work, raising up His people to confess His name throughout the world.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that the church is not my creation but Yours. You are the builder, and You are faithful. Help me to rest in Your work, to serve with faithfulness, and to trust that You are establishing Your outpost in this world until the day of Your return. Amen.

Meditation

When I think about the church, do I find comfort in knowing that Christ Himself is building it, and how does this shape the way I serve within it?
