…and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

– Matthew 16:18B

Since gates are defensive structures, it is Hades—the realm of spiritual forces of evil—that is under siege. The church, as the outpost of the kingdom, is on the offensive, advancing into enemy territory with the gospel. Wherever the good news is proclaimed, the grip of death is broken, and the reign of Christ is extended. The gates cannot hold against the King who builds His church.

This changes how we see ourselves. The outpost is not a fortress retreating from the world, but a base of operations pushing forward the kingdom’s mission. Evangelism is the spearhead of this advance, as the light of Christ penetrates the darkness and rescues people from death into life. Every act of witness, every word of testimony, every sending of the gospel into the world is a strike against the gates of Hades. More people will confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God; and the enemy will not succeed in defending its gates against the mission of the church.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that Your church is not weak or retreating, but advancing in Your power. Give me boldness to take part in this mission, to speak the gospel with courage, and to trust that the gates of death cannot withstand the advance of Your kingdom. Amen.

Meditation

How does seeing the church as an advancing outpost, rather than a retreating fortress, change the way I think about evangelism and my role in it?
