Two grieving disciples walked along the road to Emmaus, struggling to make sense of recent events. Jesus—the one they had hoped was the Messiah—had been crucified. Though news of His resurrection had begun to spread, they remained confused and disheartened. Then a stranger joined them. It was Jesus Himself, but they didn’t recognise Him. Rather than immediately reveal His identity, He opened the Scriptures to them. From Moses to the Prophets, He showed them how all of it pointed to Himself.
Jesus didn’t just cherry-picked a few verses that fit His agenda, but He interpreted to them the whole story of Scripture. From Moses to the Prophets, the Old Testament had always been telling His story. The Bible isn’t mainly about moral lessons or historical facts; it is the unfolding narrative of redemption, with Jesus at the centre. He is the thread that weaves every page together. Missing Jesus when we read the Bible—both the Old and New Testaments—is to miss the whole point of Scripture.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that the Scriptures are about You. Help me to see You more clearly each time I open my Bible. Teach me to read with eyes of faith, looking for how every part reveals Your grace and truth. Amen.
