Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

The Old Testament prophets were not merely scribes recording distant or disconnected events. They were inspired by the Spirit of Christ Himself, writing about a salvation they longed to understand more fully. Their words—though addressed to their own generations—were ultimately looking forward to the sufferings and glories of Jesus. The prophets were guided by a divine hand, bearing witness to a Redeemer they could not yet name, but whom we now know as Jesus of Nazareth.
This means that the Old Testament is far more than a historical archive. It is a treasure chest of promises, shadows, and signs—all infused with the hope of Christ. When Isaiah spoke of a suffering servant, or when David sang of a righteous king, they were moved by the very Spirit of the Messiah they anticipated. As believers today, we stand in a privileged position: we see clearly what the prophets could only glimpse. Every page of Scripture whispers His name, and the Spirit who inspired it still opens our eyes to see in it our wonderful Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that the very Spirit of Christ spoke through the prophets, pointing forward to the salvation we now enjoy. Open my eyes to see how You are woven into every part of Scripture. Fill me with awe and gratitude for the grace that was promised and is now fulfilled. Amen.
