If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

Here is a very solemn teaching: anyone who destroys God’s temple will in turn be destroyed by God. The word “destroy” implies corrupting, defiling, or bringing something to ruin. In context, Paul is speaking of those who, through false teaching, divisive behaviour, or selfish ambition, damage the life and unity of the church. To harm the church is not a trivial matter. It is to provoke the wrath of God Himself. Why? Because His temple is holy, and He is fiercely committed to its purity and wellbeing. The local church is not just another human institution. It is the Holy Spirit’s sacred dwelling, and God will protect it as such.
This is a countercultural word for our times. In an age where church divisions, slander, and casual criticism abound—even from within—it is easy to forget how seriously God takes the health and unity and purity of His people. It also reminds those in positions of leadership that we are stewards of something holy, not owners of an enterprise. Whether by doctrinal compromise, power abuse, or relational negligence, to tear down the church is to invite God’s judgment. On the other hand, to build up the church is to align ourselves with God’s own purposes.

Lord, forgive me for the times I have spoken or acted carelessly toward Your church. Teach me to guard its unity, to speak words that build up, and to labour for its holiness. Make me a faithful servant in Your holy dwelling. Amen.
