The Church is God’s temple, and the Spirit of God dwells within it. The “you” here is plural in Greek—Paul is not referring to individual believers (though that is true in other contexts, e.g., 1 Cor 6:19), but to the church as a gathered community. In other words, the people of God corporately are the new sacred space where God’s presence dwells. Just as God’s glory filled the tabernacle and the temple in the Old Testament, now His Spirit inhabits the church. This is not something to be taken lightly. The truth that we are the church is a very serious matter before the Lord.
This truth reshapes how we view the local church. It is not merely a social gathering, a Sunday routine, or a religious service provider. It is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Every time the church gathers in Jesus’ name, we are participating in something holy and eternal. This means our relationships in the church, our worship, our teaching, our service—all of it—is sacred. To build carelessly, to treat others thoughtlessly, or to be indifferent to the church’s health is an offense against God’s dwelling. But to honour the church is to honour the very presence of God.
Prayer
Father, open my eyes to see the church as You see it—holy, precious, and filled with Your Spirit. Teach me to treat the community of believers with reverence, love, and care, knowing that You dwell among us. Amen.
