You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

Jesus spoke these words to the religious leaders of His day—people who were devoted to the study of Scripture, yet blind to the very One the Scriptures revealed. They believed eternal life could be found through their knowledge and observance of the law, but they missed the point entirely. Jesus exposes the tragedy of their approach: they were standing in front of the source of life, but they refused to come to Him. All their devotion, all their religious effort, could not give them what only He could provide.
This is a sobering reminder that it is possible to be immersed in religious activity and yet still remain spiritually dead. The Scriptures are precious because they lead us to Jesus, but they are not life in themselves. Only in Christ do we find eternal life. Christianity is not ultimately about mastering a book or keeping rules—it is about encountering a person. Jesus calls us not just to believe facts about Him, but to come to Him personally and receive life. If we miss Him, we miss everything.

Lord Jesus, I don’t want to settle for knowledge about You without actually knowing You. Draw me to Yourself, the only source of true life. Amen.
