Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’

Jesus speaks these words to Martha at the grave of her brother Lazarus. Yet it is in this very place, overshadowed by death, that Jesus reveals Himself as the source of life. The power to conquer death is not a theological concept or merely an event in the future, but a person. Eternal life is not mainly about immortal existence beyond death but it is union with the One who has authority over death itself. Believing in Jesus means death no longer has the final say.
Jesus’ question to Martha, “Do you believe this?” is something each of us must contend with. Those who believe in Him will live, even though they die physically, and they will never die eternally. This promise is demonstrated by raising Lazarus later confirmed by His own resurrection. The exclusivity of eternal life through Christ is not merely a doctrine; it is a doorway through death into everlasting life, opened by the One who has passed through it Himself and emerged victorious.

Lord Jesus, thank You that in You, death is not the end. Strengthen my faith to trust that even in the face of death, You hold my life secure. Help me live each day with the hope of resurrection and the assurance of eternal life. Amen.
