Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’

Jesus is unique in that He does not simply claim to show the way to God, teach the truth about God, or exemplify life with God. He declares that He is the way, the truth, and the life. These are not abstract religious ideas; they are bound up concretely in the person of Jesus. To know Jesus is to be on the way. To believe Him is to live in the truth. To belong to Him is to receive life eternal. His claim excludes all other routes to the Father, not out of narrow-mindedness, but because only Jesus bridges the chasm between sinful humanity and the holy God.
These words were spoken to comfort His disciples as Jesus prepared for the cross. The disciples feared losing Him, but Jesus promised that He Himself would be the path that leads to the Father. This is the heart of Christian hope: not that we find our way to God, but that God has come to us in Jesus, and in Him we are brought home. The exclusivity of Jesus is a gift because God has not left us guessing. He makes it clear that Jesus is the only way to the Father.

Lord Jesus, I praise You that I do not have to earn my way to the Father or wander in uncertainty. You alone are the way, the truth, and the life. Amen.
