You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

To belong to Christ is to have His Spirit. This is the defining mark of the Christian: the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s presence in your life is God’s claim upon you. To be “in the Spirit” means that your identity has changed, your reality has changed, and your allegiance has changed. Assurance of salvation, then, is not built upon fluctuating emotions or spiritual highs, but on the objective presence of the Spirit within you.
What is the evidence that the Spirit dwells in us? Transformation. A heart that grieves over sin, a desire to obey God, an awareness of His presence, a growing love for Christ—these are all signs of the Spirit’s indwelling. Believers sometimes fear that they don’t belong to Christ because of weakness or failure. But Paul points us back to the truth: the Spirit of Christ is in you, and therefore you belong to Him. You are not an outsider looking in. You are His. The Spirit who lives in you is God’s seal, His mark of ownership, and His ongoing presence until the day of redemption.

Merciful Father, thank You that Your Spirit dwells in me and marks me as Yours. When I doubt or feel distant, remind me that I belong to Christ—not because I hold tightly to Him, but because He holds tightly to me. Amen.
