There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

These opening verses of Romans 8 are a breath of fresh air for every weary soul. After Paul’s wrestling with the power of sin in Romans 7, he now declares with joyful certainty: “There is therefore now no condemnation.” This is not wishful thinking or blind optimism. It is a definitive verdict, rooted in what Christ has done and sealed by the Holy Spirit. The believer no longer lives under the crushing sentence of guilt, because Jesus bore that condemnation on the cross. Although the atonement is the basis of our salvation, Paul doesn’t stop there. He draws our attention to the “law of the Spirit of life.” For we need to be set free not only from the penalty of sin, but also its enslaving power.
Whereas the old “law” of sin and death ruled over us, the new “law” brings life. In other words, assurance of salvation is not only that our past sins are forgiven but that a new principle of life is at work in us. The indwelling Spirit guarantees that we are no longer defined by our failures but by our union with Christ. Every time we experience freedom from sin’s pull, every time our hearts are lifted in worship, every time we long for holiness, we are tasting the fruit of the Spirit’s liberating work. And all of it testifies: You are no longer condemned. You are free.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that there is now no condemnation for me because I am in You. Help me to walk in the freedom the Holy Spirit gives, no longer bound by fear or guilt. Amen.

Where in my life do I still live as though I am under condemnation, and how can I allow the Spirit to lead me into the freedom Christ has already secured for me?
