And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
– Matthew 10:28
We live in a world where threats to our bodies are taken very seriously. Illness, violence, natural disaster, and death dominate headlines and shape many of our daily decisions. That’s understandable. But Jesus draws our attention to a more important reality. He reminds us that the body, though important, is not ultimate. There is something about us that transcends our physical existence: the soul. And no earthly threat, no matter how terrifying, has the power to destroy it.
This is both a comfort and a warning. It’s a comfort because it means our true selves are not ultimately at the mercy of what others do to us. Even if our bodies suffer, the soul can remain secure in God. But it’s also a warning: the One who made us, body and soul, is the One who has ultimate authority over our eternal destiny. If we only fear what can happen to our bodies, we’re not seeing the full picture. But if we fear the Lord — with awe, reverence, and trust — we are placing our lives in the hands of the only One who can preserve our souls.
Prayer
Lord, help me not to be ruled by fear of earthly threats. Teach me to live in reverent awe of You, knowing that You alone hold my body and soul. Give me the desire to live for what is eternal. Amen.
Meditation
What fears have been dominating my life lately — and how might those fears change if I truly believed that my soul is secure in Christ?
