If we were merely physical — nothing more than atoms and molecules — then accumulating as much physical goods as we can would be the most logical thing to do. Why not gain the whole world? But Jesus confronts that worldview with a piercing question: What good is it to gain everything visible and tangible, yet lose your soul?
The Bible tells us that we are not only bodies; we are also souls — and our souls were created for eternity. That means our deepest longings are not merely physical but spiritual. We yearn for purpose, love, beauty, and truth. These are things that cannot be reduced to matter. And because our souls are meant to live beyond the boundaries of this earthly life, the condition of the soul is far more important than the size of our bank accounts or the number of our achievements. Jesus’ words are a wake-up call to examine what we are truly living for.
Prayer
Lord, help me see beyond the temporary glitter of this world. Remind me that I am not just made for now, but created for eternity. Teach me to treasure my soul and to entrust it fully to You. Amen.
