Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
– Genesis 2:7
We often hear that human beings are made of stardust. This is a poetic way of saying our bodies are composed of the same elements as the universe. While there’s truth in that, Scripture tells us more. We are not just dust. We are dust plus breath. This is more than poetic language; it reveals a profound truth: our physical existence does not fully define us. What makes us truly human includes the soul breathed into us by our Creator.
This means your life is not merely a matter of biology or chemistry. You are not reducible to atoms and instincts. There is something spiritual about you — a part of you that can know God, love deeply, feel the ache of conscience, and long for something more. The soul is not an illusion; it is the truest part of who you are. And because your soul comes from God, it finds its purpose only in Him.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for breathing life into me. Help me remember that I am more than just flesh and blood — I am made to know You, love You, and walk with You. Let me live today with an awareness of my soul and its longing for You. Amen.
Meditation
In what ways have I been living as if I were only a body — neglecting the care and nourishment of my soul?
