Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

– Matthew 11:28-29

So much of modern life is wearisome. We work long hours and have endless obligations. Beyond that, our souls are tired. We chase after success, approval, comfort, or meaning, but so often end up burdened, anxious, and restless. Jesus sees that, and He offers more than surface-level relief. He offers something deeper: rest not merely for our schedules or our bodies, but rest for our souls.

Jesus assumes here that you have a soul. Your soul is not just thoughts or feelings, but an inner self that can be weary, burdened, and in need of rest. That rest doesn’t come from doing less or escaping life’s pressures. It comes from surrender. “Take my yoke upon you,” He says (which sounds like more work at first.) But His yoke is light because He bears the weight alongside us. And more than that, He brings our souls into alignment with what they were made for: relationship with Him. In Him, the soul can exhale. The soul can finally be at peace.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I am tired in places I can’t always name. Teach me to come to You — not just with my work or my needs, but with my soul. Help me find rest in Your gentle, trustworthy presence. Amen.

Meditation

Where in my life do I feel soul-weary, and how might Jesus be inviting me to find rest in Him?
