Week 50 Day 1 – Until You See the Scandal

The Christmas story we love to tell is full of angels, stars, and shepherds, but Matthew begins with something far less sentimental: scandal. A young woman betrothed is discovered pregnant, and the child is not her fiancé’s. In that culture, this was not merely awkward—it was a public disgrace that could lead to stoning. Joseph, a righteous man, plans a quiet divorce to spare Mary the full weight of shame. Yet in God’s sovereign design, the Saviour enters the world under a cloud of suspicion and dishonour. The cradle is wrapped in questions no one could answer satisfactorily.

Jesus did not come first to a palace or even to a respectable home, but into a story that looked like failure and sin. He began His life identified with the shamed so that He could end it bearing the ultimate shame of the cross. The scandal in the stable foreshadows the scandal of Calvary, where the sinless One would be treated as the worst of sinners. Christmas isn’t Christmas until we see that the baby in the manger is already stepping toward the curse He would one day carry in our place.
