Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

When David opens his confession with an appeal to God’s steadfast love and abundant mercy, he shows us that repentance is never an act of self-atonement. It is the return of a sinner to a God whose covenant love is already extended toward the broken. The effectiveness of confession is based entirely on the character of God. When we come before Him with honest acknowledgement of sin, we come to the One who delights to cleanse, restore, and make whole.
For the believer today, the path to spiritual renewal also begins in in God’s faithful mercy. We do not earn forgiveness by emotional intensity or promises to do better. We come because He is gracious. We know this is true because His Son, Jesus Christ, has already accomplished salvation for us on the cross. A genuine posture of repentance recognises both the seriousness of sin and the greater abundance of God’s mercy. This releases us from shame-driven spirituality and draws us into a life shaped by grace.
Prayer
Lord, draw me back to Your mercy again and again. Help me rest in Your steadfast love as I confess my sins honestly and humbly before You. Amen.
