Week 44 Day 2 – The First Worker

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.

– Genesis 1:2-3

Before there were humans, temples, or even worship songs, there was work — divine, purposeful, and creative. The earth was formless and void until God began to speak order into chaos. By His word, He separated light from darkness, waters from land, and shaped a world where life could flourish. This is the essence of all godly work: to take what is unformed and bring structure, to transform disorder into harmony, and to prepare space where creation can thrive.

When we engage in our daily work, we mirror this divine activity. Whether we organise, teach, design, build, or lead, we participate in God’s ongoing work of bringing order to a disordered world. Every spreadsheet balanced, every system improved, every relationship reconciled reflects the Creator’s hand through ours. True work is not about busyness or survival but about subduing chaos in order that goodness and life may flourish. Thus, when we create order, beauty, and justice in our spheres of influence, we are not merely earning a living, we are imitating the First Worker.

Prayer

Creator God, You were the first worker. Teach me to see my work as a reflection of Your creative power to bring order, beauty, and life wherever You have placed me. Amen.

In what ways can your work, no matter how ordinary, participate in God’s creative act of bringing order and life to a chaotic world?
