… and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

The gospel is not only the ground on which we stand but also the power by which we are being saved. Paul stresses that salvation is an ongoing reality: God’s people are continually being transformed and sustained by the good news. A gospel-driven church therefore never graduates from the gospel. Instead, it preaches, sings, teaches, and lives out the gospel again and again so that the community is continually shaped by God’s saving work.
This means a church must guard against the temptation to move on to “more practical” matters without anchoring them in the gospel. Leadership training, youth work, community outreach, and discipleship all must be framed by the gospel of Christ. Otherwise, they risk becoming moralistic or program-driven. True change and lasting fruit come only as the church clings tightly to the word of the cross and resurrection.

Lord Jesus, help us as a church to hold fast to your saving gospel. Let your word renew us daily and keep us from believing in vain. Amen.
