… which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.

– 1 Timothy 3:15b

The church can be pictured as a great structure that holds up the truth for all to see. A pillar displays and supports; a buttress gives stability and protection. Together, these images remind us that the church is entrusted with upholding and safeguarding it. We are stewards of God’s revealed Word, entrusted with proclaiming the gospel and preserving it from distortion.

This calling is weighty. The truth can be obscured when the church compromises with culture, neglects teaching, or prioritises comfort over faithfulness. But when the church lives by and proclaims the truth, it shines like a beacon in a dark world. We are called to be a community that makes the truth of Christ visible, unshakable, and defended to all who are watching.

Prayer

Lord, keep me faithful to Your truth. Guard my heart from compromise and help me to uphold Your Word with courage and grace. Use me and my church as pillars that display the beauty of Your gospel to the world. Amen.

Meditation

In what ways can I personally contribute to the church being a pillar and buttress of truth?
