In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’.

– Ephesians 5:28-31

Paul uses the “one flesh” union of marriage to describe the closeness between Christ and His Church. We are members of His body, joined to Him in such a way that our well-being is His concern. Just as we instinctively care for our own bodies, nourishing and protecting them, Christ nourishes and cherishes His people.

This reality also means that to be united with Christ is to belong entirely to Him. There is no part of us He does not claim, no area of life He does not touch. The Creator of the universe has chosen to hold fast to His Bride with covenantal love. This is a staggering level of intimacy! If such is our union with Christ, then submission to His will is not a loss of freedom but the fullest expression of belonging to the One who loves us as His very own body.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for binding me to Yourself in such deep and lasting union. Help me to live each day aware that I am Yours and to trust in Your care for me. Amen.

Meditation

What would change in my daily walk if I truly believed that Christ nourishes and cherishes me as His own body?
