Week 29 Day 4 – Family under fire

Just as Jesus promises abundance in this life—brothers, sisters, homes, and lands—He inserts an unsettling phrase: “with persecutions.” The life of a disciple includes both blessing and hardship. It is easy to idealise the Church as family until opposition arises, relationships fray, or faithfulness leads to rejection, discrimination, or loss. But persecution has always been part of the package. And it is in the crucible of suffering that the bonds of the family of God are tested and often strengthened. Real family shows up when things get hard.

Many believers around the world today are driven from their homes, disowned by relatives, or cast out of society for following Christ. Their only family becomes the Church—a band of spiritual siblings who carry each other’s burdens, weep together, protect one another, and share life amidst danger. Even in contexts where persecution is subtle or social, not violent, the call is the same: to be the kind of family that walks together through pain. When trials come, we are not to scatter, but to gather. The Church becomes most visibly the family of God when it stands shoulder-to-shoulder in the fire.
