Peter began to say to him, ‘See, we have left everything and followed you.

Following Jesus is never casual. It is a total reorientation of life that may cost us deeply. Peter’s words reflect the raw honesty of a disciple who had truly left everything: nets, boats, livelihood, and perhaps most painfully, home and kin. Discipleship is not simply the addition of Jesus to an already full life; it is the relinquishment of what once defined us—our comfort zones, social belonging, and security—in exchange for something greater. The call to follow Christ may sometimes place us at odds with our cultural or even familial ties, leaving us with the question: “Was it worth it?”
Jesus does not rebuke Peter’s comment. Instead, He affirms the cost, acknowledges the sacrifice, and points to the astonishing gains that will follow. There is pain in losing long-held relationships or structures for the sake of the gospel. Yet, in God’s providence, the Church is not only where we serve Christ together; it is where we find one another in Him. Before we rejoice in the gains, we must reckon honestly with what is left behind.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, following You is costly but You are worth more than anything I leave behind. Strengthen me to let go of what hinders and to trust You with all that I lose for Your sake. Amen.
