But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.

These two little words—“But God”—may be the most hope-filled words in all of Scripture. After describing how lost and spiritually dead we were in our sins, Paul now turns the corner. Everything changes because God stepped in. We didn’t turn our lives around. We didn’t cry out for help. We were dead. But God, out of His rich mercy and great love, brought us back to life. Not just patched us up—but gave us new life together with Christ. His resurrection becomes our resurrection.
Notice how Paul doesn’t say we earned this or even deserved it. He simply says: “by grace you have been saved.” It’s all a gift—pure, unearned kindness from a God who delights in showing mercy. When we were at our worst, He gave us His best. He didn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up. He loved us right there in our mess, and His love was not small. It was great. It’s easy to think God only draws near when we’re doing well spiritually. But this verse reminds us: He moved toward us even when we were completely dead in sin. That’s the kind of God we serve. That’s grace.

Lord, thank You for stepping in when I had nothing to offer. Thank You for loving me, not because I earned it, but simply because You are rich in mercy. Help me live in the joy of being made alive in Christ. Amen.
