For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

– Colossians 1:16–17

Scripture enjoins us to lift our vision far above mere atoms and galaxies. They speak of a universe that is not just made by Christ but made for Him. God’s Word rules out any notion that creation is random, purposeless, or self-sustaining. Everything exists because of Christ’s creative power and continues to exist because He upholds it. The universe not only has a Designer, but also a goal. That goal is Christ Himself.

The universe is not like a clock wound up and left to tick on its own. Its continued existence depends on the ongoing will and power of Christ. The intricacy, order, and durability of the cosmos are not self-explanatory. The fact that physical laws remain constant, that life continues, and that all things do not collapse into chaos testifies to a divine Sustainer. It is not simply that the world had a Designer in the beginning, but that its very stability points to an active, personal Lord who governs it still. The world is Christ-centred in origin, purpose, and ongoing existence.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are not only my Saviour, but also the Creator and Sustainer of all things. May I live with the constant awareness that all things—including my life—exist for You. Amen.

Meditation

If all things were created through Christ and for Christ, how should that truth shape the way you understand your purpose and the meaning of the world around you?
