And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, ‘Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor.’ And she said to her, ‘Go, my daughter.’

– Ruth 2:2

Ruth didn’t just sit around waiting for something to happen. She knew she and Naomi needed food, so she said, “Let me go to the field.” It was a bold move—she was a foreigner with no social standing. But Ruth stepped out anyway, not because she knew how things would turn out, but because she believed someone would show her favour. This is what faith often looks like: not dramatic miracles or loud declarations, but quiet courage to take the next right step, trusting that God will meet us there.

It’s easy to feel stuck when life is hard—especially when we’ve lost something or are in unfamiliar territory. Naomi was still grieving, but Ruth shows us that even in painful times, we can choose to move forward with faith. Her initiative reminds us that God’s provision often comes as we move, not as we wait. Ruth didn’t know that her decision to glean would lead to meeting Boaz or becoming part of God’s redemption story. She simply did what she could—and God wove her simple act of faithfulness into something far bigger than she could have imagined.

Prayer

Lord, help me not to wait for perfect conditions before I trust You. Give me the courage to take that next step, even when the way ahead feels uncertain. I know You are already there, ready to show me favour. Amen.

Meditation

Is there a step I’ve been afraid to take because I don’t know how things will turn out?
