So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelech.

– Ruth 2:3

At first glance, this verse sounds ordinary—even random. Ruth goes out, finds a field, and “just so happens” to end up in Boaz’s field. But readers of Scripture know better. What looks like coincidence is actually providence. God is quietly at work behind the scenes, orchestrating the details of Ruth’s steps to lead her right where she needs to be. She doesn’t hear a voice from heaven or see a sign in the sky. She simply goes out in faith, and God guides her feet.

This verse is a powerful reminder that God’s hand is often hidden but never absent. We may not always see what He’s doing in the moment. We might think we’re wandering through ordinary days or making random choices—but later, we look back and realise, “That was God.” He was guiding us through a job change, a conversation, a chance meeting. Ruth didn’t know she was stepping into her future that day. But God did. And the same is true for us. No step of faith is too small for God to use in His bigger plan.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that even when I don’t see it, You are guiding my steps. Help me to trust Your unseen hand, especially in the small and ordinary moments of life. Amen.

Meditation

Can I think of a time when something that seemed random turned out to be God’s direction in my life?
