For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

– Psalm 1:6

The key difference between the righteous and the wicked lies in one’s attitude toward the Word of God. What do you do with the Word of God? The righteous delight in it and meditate on it; the wicked dismiss it and live as though it were irrelevant. This fundamental difference shapes the entire course of one’s life, leading either toward a path of fruitfulness and stability or toward a path of emptiness and ruin.

To say that the Lord “knows” the way of the righteous is not simply to state His awareness but His approval and sustaining presence. This does not refer to justification—we are made right with God only by faith in Christ’s finished work—but rather to God’s approval of the sanctified life that flows out of faith. God’s pleasure rests on those who walk in obedience to His Word, and He upholds them in the journey. He watches over their way with fatherly care, guiding and preserving them both in this life and into eternity.

In contrast, the way of the wicked will perish. Their path may appear secure and prosperous for a season, but it is ultimately rootless, weightless, and dead chaff. Because it is not rooted in God’s Word, it leads to ruin, both temporal and eternal. This sobering reality reminds us that the choices we make regarding God’s Word are not trivial because they bear everlasting consequences.

Prayer

Lord, help me to love Your Word and to walk in obedience to it. Keep me on the path that pleases You and leads to life, and guard me from the way that leads to destruction. Amen.

Meditation

How does my daily relationship with God’s Word reflect whether I am walking in the way of the righteous or drifting toward the way of the wicked?
