The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
– Psalm 1:4-5
The psalmist contrasts the fruitful tree with chaff. Chaff is the dry, weightless husks left over after threshing grain. Chaff has no root, no fruit, and no lasting value. It is easily blown away by the wind. This is the image of a life without meditation on God’s Word. It is directionless, transient, and unable to withstand the scrutiny of God’s judgment. Where the Word-planted life thrives and endures, the Word-neglecting life drifts and disappears.
Those who live apart from God’s Word cannot stand in the judgment or belong to the assembly of the righteous. Meditation is not an optional add-on for spirituality; it is the very difference between a life that endures and a life that collapses. Without the Word, we may appear active, busy, or even successful, but in God’s eyes, it is as fleeting as chaff on the wind. Only a life rooted in His Word carries weight, fruit, and permanence.
