Week 36 Day 5 – Sword of the Spirit

The armour of God culminates in the church’s one offensive weapon: the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Every other piece enables us to stand firm and resist, but with the word we advance. The word pierces hearts, dismantles lies, and liberates captives. Just as Jesus resisted Satan in the wilderness with God’s word, so the church goes forward wielding Scripture to proclaim truth and shatter the enemy’s strongholds. When the word of God is faithfully proclaimed, the kingdom of darkness loses ground, and the kingdom of Christ breaks through.

Yet Paul reminds us that the word of God must be wielded prayerfully. Prayer in the Spirit keeps the army of God connected to the Commander, and dependent on His direction. Without prayer, we lack the strength to wield the sword effectively. With prayer, the Spirit empowers our speech and action so that the gospel goes forth with boldness. This is how the church advances—armed with the word of God, energised by prayer, and emboldened by the Spirit. Then the church will be a conquering army, plundering the kingdom of darkness until every tongue confesses Jesus as Lord.
