So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
– Phil 2:1-4
If we belong to Christ, then we already share the deepest bonds imaginable: encouragement in Christ, comfort from divine love, fellowship in the Spirit, and the tender affections of God Himself. Because Christ has joined us to Himself, we are joined to one another. Partnership in the gospel is not simply a matter of working together on ministry projects; it is the fruit of a shared identity.
The greatest threat to such partnership often comes from within. Selfish ambition, rivalry, and conceit fracture gospel fellowship. The call, then, is to refuse to make ourselves the centre of significance. In a world driven by self-promotion and comparison, the church is to shine as a different kind of society—one shaped by humility, where love is expressed in genuine concern for others.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, deliver me from selfish ambition and pride. Teach me to walk in humility, to serve others sincerely, and to pursue unity as a true partner in Your gospel. Amen.
Meditation
Where might selfish ambition or self-interest be hindering my ability to love others and live in true gospel partnership today?
