And assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet.’
– Matthew 2:4-5
It is possible to be deeply informed about God’s word and yet profoundly unmoved by God’s presence. The chief priests and scribes possess theological clarity but lack spiritual desire. Scripture, for them, functions as information rather than invitation. Proximity to right doctrine does not guarantee participation in it. The Messiah can be announced accurately, discussed expertly, and still be ignored personally. This devotion calls us to examine whether our engagement with Scripture leads us toward Christ or whether it has become a mere theological system allows us to talk about him without ever rising to seek him.
Prayer
Lord, guard my heart from a faith that knows much but desires little. Let your word stir not only my mind but my heart, drawing me toward Christ in worship and obedience. Do not allow familiarity with Scripture to dull my hunger for you. Amen.
Meditation
In what ways might I be content with knowing about Christ while avoiding the personal cost of actively seeking and worshiping him?
