He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
– John 1:10-11
The rejection cuts even deeper when John writes that “He came to His own.” Those who possessed the Scriptures, the promises, and the categories to recognise God’s saving action still turned away. Proximity to religious truth does not guarantee receptivity to divine presence. The Light is graciously offered, but it is not automatically welcomed. In this sense, Christmas already anticipates the cross. The resistance that greets the incarnation will ultimately culminate in rejection, suffering, and death. O how costly it is for Light to shine in a darkened world!
Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the ways I fail to recognise You even when You are near. Expose the blindness in my heart and soften my resistance to Your presence. Teach me to welcome You not only in celebration, but in obedience and trust. Amen.
Meditation
In what ways might familiarity with faith or religious practice prevent me from truly receiving Christ, and how does this passage challenge that complacency?
