Week 50 Day 5 – Until You Grasp the Problem of Sin

We love the gentle scenes of Christmas. We admire the quiet stable, the sleeping baby, the wondering shepherds, the starlit sky. Yet if we linger only there, we miss the reason heaven broke into our night. Christmas is not truly Christmas until we feel the weight of those three words—“from their sins”—and recognise that sin is the great crisis the Child in the cradle has come to resolve.

Sin is not a small mistake or a minor flaw we can manage on our own. It is rebellion against a holy God, a debt we cannot pay, a separation we cannot bridge. Every one of us stands guilty, and the wages of sin is death, i.e., eternal separation from the God who made us for Himself. The manger only makes sense against this dark backdrop. The Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths will one day hang on a cross, not for His own sins (He had none), but for ours. Only when we grasp the magnitude of our sin do we begin to grasp the magnitude of His love and the glory of His saving work.
