For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,’ that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?

– 1 Corinthians 12:14–17

In these verses, Paul imagines parts of the body feeling left out simply because they aren’t like the others. The foot feels lesser than the hand, the ear feels unimportant compared to the eye. We all know that feeling. In the church, it’s easy to think, “I’m not as gifted as she is,” or “I don’t contribute as much as he does.” But Paul’s words remind us that our feelings don’t determine our place in the body—God does. The foot and the ear are still part of the body, still vital to the whole, even if they don’t always feel that way. You are needed, even if you serve in quiet or unseen ways. Your role matters because God Himself made you a part of His body.

Paul also pushes us to imagine the absurdity of a body made entirely of eyes or ears. That kind of body would be grotesque and useless. Likewise, a church where everyone does the same thing or has the same strengths would be unhealthy and incomplete. We need the variety. God designed it that way. So instead of comparing ourselves with others or wishing we were more like someone else, we are called to embrace the role God has given us with joy. Every part of the body contributes in a way no other part can.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for making me part of Your body. Help me to stop comparing myself to others and to be faithful with the gifts You’ve given me. Let me serve with joy and confidence, knowing that I am needed and loved. Amen.

Meditation

Have I been holding back from serving in the church because I feel like I’m not as useful or gifted as others?
