But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.

A faithful father not only provides for his children, he prepares them. In the ancient world, fathers often passed down the family trade—a craft, a skill, a stewardship—to be carried on by the next generation. That is exactly what Paul is doing with Timothy. Paul knows that the gospel is not his to keep, but to entrust. He has received it, guarded it, and lived by it—and now he entrusts it to his spiritual son, so that Timothy may do the same for others.
This is the high calling of spiritual parenthood: passing on the “pattern of sound words,” not as a static message, but as a living, breathing way of life in Christ Jesus. Paul is handing over to Timothy the entire gospel-shaped way of life. The question for spiritual parents is: Are you passing on the gospel “trade”? And for spiritual children: Are you ready to carry it forward, and pass it on again?
Prayer
Father, thank you for those who entrusted the gospel to me. Help me to be faithful in passing it on, not just in word, but in life. Empower me by your Spirit to raise others who will do the same. Amen.
