For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

At the heart of the gospel lies the truth that Christ did not wait for us to become morally upright or spiritually strong. He died for us while we were weak. Paul uses the term “ungodly” deliberately—it describes not simply imperfect people, but those opposed to God in character and allegiance. This means that the cross was not a reward for righteousness but an unearned gift to those completely undeserving.
This verse reminds us that salvation is rooted in God’s initiative, not ours. In a world that rewards merit and performance, the gospel speaks of grace that humbles us. Christ’s death is the foundation for salvation precisely because it does not depend on human ability. This removes any pride and instils deep gratitude. It also gives hope: if Christ loved us in our worst state, there is no point in our lives too broken for his grace.

Lord, thank You for loving me when I was unlovely, and for dying for me when I was weak and ungodly. Help me to never forget that my salvation is all of grace. Amen.
