But Ruth said, ‘Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where
you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.’
– Ruth 1:16-17
Ruth’s declaration is breathtaking in its depth. She pledges not only to go where Naomi goes, but to live, die, and even be buried among Naomi’s people — a complete break from her past life. Her bond to Naomi and to Naomi’s God is total, lifelong, and irrevocable. She seals her commitment with a solemn oath before God, calling down divine judgment should she ever turn back. Ruth shows us that genuine faith is not partial or temporary. To belong to the Lord is to belong to Him with our whole selves, for our whole lives, through every circumstance, even unto death.
In the Gospel, Christ calls us into exactly such a covenantal relationship. When we come to Jesus, we are not entering into a casual agreement we can cancel at will. We are bound to Him by a new covenant, sealed with His own blood. His love claims us entirely, and our response is a whole-hearted surrender that lasts all our days. Like Ruth, we are called to leave behind our old allegiances and trust ourselves fully to the Lord’s grace, pledging our lives to Him. And even better, Christ pledges Himself to us—faithful to keep us, even through death, and to raise us to eternal life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for binding Yourself to me through the cross. Help me to walk in covenant loyalty to You all the days of my life. Amen.
Meditation
Am I living as someone fully bound to Christ even unto death?
