But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
– Phil 3:20-21
While the “enemies of the cross” have their minds set on earthly things, the mature believer lives with a different passport. Our primary identity is not defined by our zip code, our career, or our earthly desires; our citizenship is in heaven. This change in status changes our entire orientation. We are ambassadors living in a foreign land, representing the Kingdom of God while we eagerly await the return of our King.
This heavenly perspective is what fuels our wholehearted pursuit of Christ. It provides the “why” behind our “how.” We press on because we know this world is not our final home. Our hope is anchored in the Saviour’s return. Maturity is living today in light of that tomorrow. When we realise that Christ is coming back, the distractions of this world lose their lustre. We don’t settle for earthly scraps because we are waiting for a heavenly inheritance. This hope gives us the endurance to pursue Christ with everything we have until we see Him face to face.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for making me a citizen of Your Kingdom. I confess that I often live as if this world is my only home, getting caught up in its temporary anxieties and rewards. Fill my heart with a holy homesickness for You. As I wait for Your return, let the hope of my future transformation give me the strength to live for Your glory right now. Amen.
Meditation
How would your stress levels or your priorities change today if you truly lived as if your citizenship was in heaven rather than on earth?
