For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

– Ephesians 2:8-9

This is one of the clearest statements in all of Scripture: we are saved by grace. It is God’s unearned favour that rescues us, and we receive this salvation through faith, i.e., by trusting in what God has done for us in Christ. Paul emphasises that salvation is not our own doing. It’s not something we achieved or worked for. It’s a gift, freely offered. And because it’s a gift, there’s no room for pride, no room for boasting—only gratitude.

This truth has powerful implications for our everyday lives. We don’t have to live under the pressure of trying to be “good enough” for God. We don’t have to wonder if we’ve done enough to earn His love or His acceptance. Grace means that we start from a place of being fully accepted, fully loved, and fully forgiven. That gives us a new kind of freedom—not to be careless with our lives, but to live with joy, confidence, and having the assurance of salvation. Our obedience is no longer an attempt to win God’s favour, but a loving response to the favour we’ve already received.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that my salvation is by grace, not something I have to earn. Help me to live each day with joy and humility, knowing that I am loved not because of what I’ve done, but because of what You have done for me. Amen.

Meditation

Am I living as someone who knows they are already accepted by God, or am I still trying to earn His love?
