And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.
– Phil 1:6-7
Paul holds the Philippians in his heart because they have not withdrawn from being gospel partners with him when circumstances became difficult. They remain “partakers” with him not only when the gospel is advancing smoothly, but also when it brings suffering. Paul’s imprisonment does not result in a breakdown of their partnership.
What makes this possible is Paul’s understanding of grace. Grace is not only God’s kindness in salvation, but also God’s gift of participation in His mission. To share in the defense and confirmation of the gospel is a privilege. The Philippians have embraced this truth. They have chosen to remain partners “through thick and thin,” recognising that suffering for the gospel is part and parcel of participating in God’s grace.
Prayer
Gracious Lord, thank You for inviting me into Your work, even when it leads through hardship. Give me a heart that does not shrink back when the road is difficult, but gladly shares in the privilege of standing with the gospel and with Your people. Amen.
Meditation
Do I see suffering due to the gospel as a burden or a privilege of being a participant of God’s grace?
