But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
– John 1:12-13
Those who believe are given “the right to become children of God.” Becoming God’s child is not grounded in ancestry, pedigree, or human effort, but in divine action alone. John is careful to dismantle every possible claim to self-regeneration. Regeneration begins with God’s initiative. He is forming a family, bringing people out of darkness and into the intimacy of belonging as His children.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for welcoming me into Your family through Your Son. Remind me that my identity rests not in my effort or background, but in Your gracious gift. Help me to live each day as a child of God. Amen.
Meditation
How does understanding my faith as a new birth from God, rather than a personal achievement, reshape the way I see myself and others?
