Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.
– Psalm 1:1
A truly spiritual lifestyle begins with separation from voices and patterns that lead us away from God. To meditate on God’s Word, we must first guard against meditating on the counsel of the world. The progression from walking to standing to sitting reveals how influence hardens into habit and identity. If we are careless about the voices shaping us, we slowly move from casual exposure to full identification with those who oppose God.
Meditating on God’s Word is not merely about filling our minds with Scripture; it is also about filtering out what contradicts God’s truth. Every day, we are invited to tune into countless “counsels” through media, culture, and peers. The spiritual lifestyle of meditation calls us to recognise that the Word of God alone provides wisdom that leads to life. Separation from ungodly counsel is not isolation but orientation. It turns us away from the world’s emptiness and positions us to be filled with God’s life-giving Word.
Prayer
Lord, help me discern the voices that seek to shape my heart and mind. Give me wisdom to turn away from ungodly influences and strength to resist the subtle pull of sin. Amen.
Meditation
Am I more shaped by the voices of culture, media, and peers, or by the counsel of Scripture? In what ways have I “walked,” “stood,” or “sat” with ungodly influences?
