None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.

– Romans 3:11-12

Paul presents a piercing diagnosis of the human condition. Sin is not just about isolated wrong actions—it is a deep and pervasive condition that affects every part of our being: our minds (“no one understands”), our wills (“all have turned aside”), and our spiritual inclinations (“no one seeks for God”). This passage dismantles the popular belief that people are inherently good. On the contrary, apart from divine grace, no one has the desire or the capacity to seek after the true and living God.

This truth humbles us profoundly. It reminds us that our salvation is not due to our initiative but to God’s mercy and pursuit. We did not find God; He found us. Left to ourselves, we would all turn away, seeking gods of our own making or living as if God didn’t matter. But God, in His great love, drew near to us through Christ. When we remember this, our worship becomes more sincere, our gratitude deeper, and our sense of mission more urgent—for others, too, are lost until God seeks them through the gospel.

Prayer

Father, thank You for seeking me when I was not seeking You. Humble my heart with the truth of my own lostness and lift my eyes to the wonder of Your pursuing grace. Amen.

Meditation

How does knowing that I would never have sought God on my own deepen my appreciation for His grace and shape how I share the gospel with others?
