Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.
– Phil 3:17
To ensure we stay on the trajectory of maturity—that relentless, absolute pursuit of Christ—God has gifted us with flesh-and-blood roadmaps. These are the brothers and sisters in the body of Christ who embody what it means to count all things loss for the sake of knowing Jesus. We have the privilege of “keeping our eyes” on those further along the path. We don’t imitate them because they are perfect, but because their lives consistently point toward the One who is.
However, the call to follow an example also means that we must also set an example for others. As we gain ground in our pursuit of Christ, our lives become a compass for those behind us. When we devote ourselves completely to Jesus, we create a holy momentum that sweeps others along with us. We follow suit so that we might lead well, ensuring that the entire church moves together toward the prize of the upward call.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the mentors and friends You have placed in my life who model a genuine hunger for You. Help me to be humble enough to follow their lead and observant enough to learn from their faithfulness. I also ask that You would make my own life a steady, reliable example for others. Amen.
Meditation
Who is one person in your life whose “walk” inspires you to pursue Christ more fervently, and who is one person looking to you for that same inspiration?
