Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh.

– Phil 3:2-3

Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh.
In Paul’s day, there were those who insisted that outward religious marks—circumcision, law observance, visible credentials—were necessary to belong fully to God’s people. Paul sees the danger immediately. When we begin to rely on external badges of spirituality, we slowly shift our trust away from Christ and toward ourselves. What begins as religious zeal can quietly become spiritual self-reliance.

The genuine people of God are those who worship by the Spirit, glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh. Our background, achievements, heritage, or moral record are laid down at the foot of the cross. The Christian life is not characterised by religious résumé but by continual reliance on the Spirit and boasting in Christ alone.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, guard my heart from placing confidence in my own achievements or religious identity. Teach me to glory in You alone and to rest fully in what You have done for me. Amen.

Meditation

In what subtle ways might I be placing confidence in my spiritual background, performance, or reputation rather than in Christ alone?
