Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
– Phil 1:12-14
Setbacks, persecution, and rejection are never pleasant, but in the life of gospel partners, they are never wasted. Paul’s imprisonment could have been a source of discouragement, yet he sees it as an opportunity for the gospel to advance. Far from weakening his partnerships, hardship strengthens them. Fellow believers, seeing Paul endure for Christ, are emboldened to proclaim the Word without fear. Genuine gospel partnership draws courage from shared suffering, creating a community that stands together even when the cost is high.
Being a partner in the gospel means entering into this solidarity. When one suffers for Christ, others are strengthened to press on. Trials become a source of inspiration rather than despair. As partners, we are called to see setbacks not as interruptions but as reminders that we are part of a larger story—a story of faithfulness, perseverance, and shared witness that stretches from those who have gone before to those who will continue the mission after us. Courage is contagious among gospel partners. When one stands firm, others gain boldness to do the same.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to see trials and opposition not as discouragement, but as opportunities to grow in courage and strengthen others. Help me stand faithfully alongside those who have suffered for the gospel, and inspire me to speak Your Word boldly in solidarity with them. Amen.
Meditation
When I face setbacks or rejection for the sake of Christ, do I shrink back, or do I let it remind me of the courage and faithfulness of others, spurring me to be bolder in partnership?
